AREAS OF FOCUS

People do not arrive as categories. These concerns often overlap.

A CLINICAL PERSPECTIVE

A symptom can be painful and purposeful at the same time.

A symptom can be painful and purposeful at the same time.

Symptoms carry meaning. A person’s response to distress may have offered protection or made something survivable. Therapy is a place to understand what that response has been doing, and what else may now be possible.

It may also become disconnected from the conditions that first made it necessary. Therapy makes space for multiple truths. The suffering deserves direct attention, and so does the intelligence of the adaptation.
